This shorter stage follows the Rhône between two twin towns facing each other across the river: Tarascon, known for its medieval castle and the legend of the Tarasque, and Beaucaire, on the opposite bank, which also has a remarkable fortress.
The scenery gradually flattens and opens onto wide expanses, signalling the nearby Camargue: rice paddies, the first salt marshes and flocks of pink flamingos sometimes visible from the greenway.
Arriving in Arles, a town shaped by rich Roman heritage (an amphitheatre, an ancient theatre) and by Vincent van Gogh’s stay, during which he painted over 300 works, marks the entry into the Rhône delta and the final stretch of the route.
