This stage crosses the heart of one of France’s most prestigious vineyards: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, whose vines grow in a distinctive stony soil, offers plenty of tasting opportunities directly accessible from the route.

A detour of a few kilometres leads to Orange and its remarkably preserved ancient theatre, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the best-preserved of the Roman world.

Arriving in Avignon, the medieval city of the popes, is one of the heritage highlights of the whole route: intact ramparts, the Palais des Papes, and the famous Pont Saint-Bénezet, immortalised in the nursery rhyme, which today stops halfway across the river.
