The Tokaj vineyard, in the hills of Zemplén, offers a bike ride at the heart of a wine landscape listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, birthplace of the legendary Tokaji Aszú.
A wine loop on volcanic terroir
From Tokaj, at the confluence of the Tisza and Bodrog rivers, the road winds through the vineyards toward Mád and then Tarcal, on soil characteristically volcanic for the region. Expect around 30 km and 400 m of elevation gain for a loop representative of the vineyard, on a rolling profile that crosses several historic wine villages with cave cellars.
Getting the ride right
The profile, made up of moderate kicks between the villages, stays accessible to most cyclists. Extra bottle cages remain useful in summer, as the region can see high temperatures at the height of the season.
When to go
April to June and September to October, as the late harvest characteristic of Tokaji Aszú usually takes place in November, well after the best window for riding. Spring and early autumn offer the most pleasant conditions for exploring the vineyard by bike.
Good to know
Tokaj and Mád offer a decent choice of accommodation and numerous cellars to visit, with convenient access to Sárospatak, a nearby historic town, for extending the stay in the Zemplén region.
