The Danube Bend (Dunakanyar), between Szentendre and Esztergom, offers one of Hungary’s most scenic bike rides, along a river that abruptly changes direction at the foot of Visegrád’s royal citadel.
A path along the Danube between heritage and hills
From Szentendre, an artistic town with strong Serbian influence, the cycle path follows the Danube toward Visegrád and then Esztergom, offering continuous views of the river and the surrounding wooded hills. Expect around 35 km for a loop representative of the region, on a route that’s almost entirely flat, following the river’s course.
Getting the ride right
No specific gearing is needed for this ride, with a generally flat profile. The ruins of the royal palace and Visegrád’s citadel, reached by a short detour from the path, are worth a long stop to enjoy the view over the Danube Bend.
When to go
April to October, with spring and autumn bringing lighter tourist crowds than summer on this heavily visited stretch of the Danube. Esztergom, at the end of the ride, is home to Hungary’s largest basilica, visible from afar along the path.
