Family

Larnaca Salt Lake, just minutes from the international airport, turns into a refuge for thousands of flamingos every winter, offering one of the most accessible and unexpectedly scenic bike rides on Cyprus’s south coast.

The route

From Larnaca, a stabilized path and small flat roads circle the salt lake toward Kiti, covering about 11 km with just 30 m of combined elevation gain. The entirely flat route follows the lakeshore and passes right by the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque.

How to approach the ride

No difficulty at all — a standard city bike is more than enough for this short, flat route, suitable for young riders and beginners alike. Bring binoculars to watch the flamingos from a respectful distance without disturbing them.

When to go

November to March, when flamingos are present on the lake in numbers. In summer the lake dries up almost completely and takes on a white salt crust — an equally striking sight, just without the birds.

Good to know

The Hala Sultan Tekke mosque, ringed by palm trees, can be visited outside prayer times and remains open to non-Muslim visitors who respect the site. Larnaca International Airport, just north of the lake, adds the bonus of watching planes take off for anyone curious.

Frequently asked questions

When can you see the flamingos on Larnaca Salt Lake?+

Several thousand flamingos winter on the lake from November to March, drawn by the crustaceans that thrive in its highly saline water. The site, one of the most important in the eastern Mediterranean for the species, dries up almost entirely in summer.

What is the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque?+

Sitting on the lake's shore, this mosque is considered one of the most important holy sites in Sunni Islam, said to hold the tomb of Umm Haram, a revered figure linked to the Prophet Muhammad's circle. The site draws pilgrims and visitors year-round, regardless of flamingo season.
