The Stockholm archipelago, made up of around 30,000 islands and islets, is best explored with kids from Vaxholm, the archipelago’s historic gateway, on a network of country lanes and ferries that let you freely piece together your own route.

An island loop accessible by ferry

From Vaxholm, overlooked by its historic fortress, country lanes and cycle paths wind across the island before linking, via the Waxholmsbolaget ferry network, to other neighbouring islands like Ingmarsö. Expect around 15 km for a loop representative of the region, on gently rolling terrain typical of the archipelago.

Getting the family ride right

With barely 60 m of cumulative elevation gain, this ride poses no difficulty for young kids pedalling on their own. The public ferries, which take bikes at no extra charge, make it easy to break up the ride or explore several islands in a single day.

When to go

May to September, with the long days of the Nordic summer offering the most flexibility for exploring several islands. Ferry traffic runs more frequently in peak summer season, making connections between islands easier.

Good to know

Vaxholm, less than an hour by boat or road from Stockholm, offers a decent choice of accommodation, with convenient access to the Swedish capital for combining the ride with an urban visit.
