MTB

Livigno, an alpine resort tucked into a border valley with Switzerland at over 1,800 m altitude, has established itself as one of the most complete bike parks in the Italian Alps. Served by several bike-equipped cable cars, the area combines classic bike-park trails with wilder alpine-pasture singletrack.

A cable-car-served bike area

From central Livigno, the Mottolino and Carosello 3000 cable cars give access to a trail network dropping toward the valley from over 2,700 m in places. Expect around 25 km of cumulative descent over a typical day, with 400 m of residual climbing, most of the elevation gain handled by the lifts. Terrain alternates maintained bike-park trails with more technical alpine-pasture singletrack, with views reaching the neighbouring Swiss peaks.

Getting the ride right

The area grades its trails by level, making it easy to build a progressive day without committing straight away to the most technical sections. The altitude, over 1,800 m even at the valley floor, can call for a day of acclimatisation for riders coming from lower elevations.

When to go

June to September, when the lifts dedicated to mountain biking are running. July-August offers the best weather, with alpine meadows in full bloom.

Good to know

Livigno’s duty-free status makes sports and cycling gear cheaper than elsewhere in Italy, one more reason to visit beyond the terrain itself. The resort has a wide choice of accommodation geared toward active sports tourism year-round.

Frequently asked questions

Does Livigno suit families new to mountain biking?+

Yes, more so than most Alpine bike parks: the area offers a wide range of blue and red trails accessible without much prior experience, alongside more committing black sections reserved for confident riders. The cable car also makes learning easier, without long pedal-powered climbs.

Why is Livigno a popular cycling destination beyond mountain biking?+

The area has a special tax status that makes sports gear cheaper than elsewhere in Italy, which also draws road cyclists shopping for equipment. The valley itself, at over 1,800 m altitude, doubles as an altitude training camp for professional riders.
