The Passo Rolle, in the Trentino Dolomites, holds a special place in Giro d’Italia history: the first Dolomite pass ever included in the race’s route, in 1937, it remains a must-ride climb for anyone visiting the region.
The profile from Predazzo
From Predazzo, expect about 20.6 km and 975 m of climbing, averaging a moderate 4.7% on a road with no extreme sections. The climb first crosses the Paneveggio forest before opening onto a high-mountain landscape typical of the Dolomites, with the iconic Pala peaks as a backdrop at the summit, around 1,980 m.
Getting the ride right
The steady, moderate gradient allows a sustained tempo across the whole climb without needing to manage effort closely, making it a good option for getting started on the great Dolomite passes. Riders after a shorter, more selective ascent may prefer the south side, from San Martino di Castrozza.
When to go
June to September, as snow can linger late on this high pass early in the season. July-August remains the busiest period, partly due to car tourists also using this road.
Good to know
Predazzo, at the entrance to the Val di Fiemme, offers a good choice of accommodation, with convenient access to San Martino di Castrozza on the south side for combining the climb with exploring the Primiero valley and the Pale di San Martino massif.
