Lake Bled, one of Slovenia’s most photographed sites, is best explored by bike on a flat loop that offers ever-changing views of its island, church and the castle perched on a nearby cliff.
A flat loop around an iconic lake
From the village of Bled, the path follows the lake for about 6 km for a full loop, entirely flat and mostly separated from car traffic. The route successively reveals Bled Island and its baroque church, the medieval castle perched over 100 m above the water, and the peaks of the Julian Alps in the background on a clear day.
Getting the family ride right
With barely 30 m of cumulative elevation gain, this ride poses no difficulty and suits very young kids pedalling on their own. The full loop takes about an hour, leaving plenty of time for photo stops or to take a pletna across to the island along the way.
When to go
April to October, with summer offering the chance to swim in the lake to cool off the whole family after the ride. Spring and autumn, less busy with tourism, let you enjoy the site in relative calm.
Good to know
Bled offers a wide choice of tourist accommodation, along with its local specialty, kremšnita (cream cake), best enjoyed on a lakeside terrace, and convenient access to nearby Lake Bohinj for extending the stay in Upper Carniola.
