The Diarizos Valley, in the Paphos hinterland, offers a rural Cyprus still spared from coastal tourism: stone villages, terraced olive groves, and quiet country roads following the Diarizos River up toward the Troodos foothills.
The route
From Kouklia, the road follows the Diarizos Valley toward Nikokleia and then Choletria, covering about 38 km with 500 m of combined elevation gain. The rolling terrain alternates lightly trafficked paved roads with short stretches of farm track through olive groves and vineyards.
How to approach the ride
A gravel bike with tires around 38-42mm handles this comfortably, since the unpaved sections stay limited and easy-rolling. The villages along the way have few shops — better to set off with enough water and food.
When to go
October to April, as summer heat makes the Paphos hinterland particularly dry and unpleasant for riding. Mild winter and spring bring lush countryside and ideal temperatures instead.
Good to know
Aphrodite’s Rock (Petra tou Romiou), one of Cyprus’s most photographed coastal sites, where mythology holds the goddess rose from the sea foam, sits a few kilometers south of Kouklia and makes for a fitting detour to close out the ride.
