Gravel

The Akamas Peninsula, at Cyprus’s northwestern tip, remains one of the island’s last great wild spaces: Mediterranean maquis, secluded coves, and packed-dirt tracks far from any development, between Lara Bay and the Baths of Aphrodite.

The route

From Latchi, dirt and stone tracks hug the coast toward Neo Chorio before entering Akamas National Park and reaching the edge of Lara Bay, covering about 34 km with 480 m of combined elevation gain. The terrain, rolling rather than mountainous, alternates wide tracks with narrower paths through the maquis.

How to approach the ride

Wide gravel tires (40-45mm minimum) are recommended, as some rocky sections can turn technical. Shade is scarce over most of the route — carry a generous water reserve, since there’s no refueling point once you leave Latchi.

When to go

October to April, since summer heat makes the ride grueling across the shadeless maquis. Spring, from March to May, also brings a remarkable bloom of wild orchids endemic to the peninsula.

Good to know

The Baths of Aphrodite, reachable only on foot from the car park at the end of the track, are worth the detour even though swimming in the pool itself is prohibited. Lara Bay, further along, remains off-limits on certain beach sections during peak turtle nesting season (June to September).

Frequently asked questions

What are the Baths of Aphrodite?+

According to legend, this small natural pool fed by a waterfall, tucked into a green grotto at the tip of the peninsula, is where the goddess Aphrodite is said to have bathed before her encounters with Adonis. The site, now protected, is reached on foot from the end of the bike track.

Why is Lara Bay protected?+

Lara Bay is one of the main nesting sites for loggerhead and green turtles in the eastern Mediterranean, protected since the 1970s. Beach access is restricted during nesting season, from June to September, to keep the nests undisturbed.
