Family

The canal linking Bruges to Damme, dug in the 17th century, offers one of Flanders’ most iconic family bike rides: a flat path lined with century-old poplars that form a genuine green tunnel over several kilometres.

A flat path beneath the poplars

From the centre of Bruges, the path follows the Damme canal for about 7 km to the small town of Damme, a former port town now nicknamed “Belgium’s smallest city.” The route, entirely flat and separated from car traffic for most of the way, runs alongside rows of poplars planted in the 19th century that form a particularly photogenic green tunnel.

Getting the family ride right

With barely 5 m of elevation gain one way, this ride poses no difficulty and suits kids pedalling on their own from a young age. For families who’d rather not do the full round trip, the Lamme Goedzak tourist boat offers a way back to Bruges by water.

When to go

April to October, with summer offering the advantage of the poplars in full leaf for shade and scenery. The Lamme Goedzak boat generally runs only in season, from April to September, so it’s worth checking the timetable in advance if you’re planning to take the boat option.

Good to know

Bruges, a UNESCO World Heritage museum-city, offers the widest choice of accommodation in the region, with Damme as an easy half-day destination to combine with a visit to Bruges’ historic centre.

Frequently asked questions

Can you ride out and take a boat back?+

Yes, a historic tourist boat, the Lamme Goedzak, links Bruges to Damme along the same canal in season, letting you combine a ride out with a boat back (or the reverse) — a popular option for families with young kids who'd rather not do the full round trip by bike.

Why is this canal so photographed?+

Poplars planted in tight rows on both sides of the canal form a green tunnel over much of the route, particularly striking in late spring and autumn — a setting that has earned this route its reputation as one of Belgium's most photogenic bike rides.
