Zlatibor, a wooded plateau in western Serbia topping out at 1,496 m, is one of the country’s most popular holiday destinations — and an ideal playground for a family bike ride, well away from any Alpine-scale climbs.

A gentle loop across the plateau

Starting from Čajetina, the loop covers 25.1 km for just 389 m of total elevation gain, on a route of rolling terrain that never turns severe. The road surface, in good condition for most of the way, crosses meadows and conifer forest typical of the plateau, with wide-open views over the surrounding hills.

A plateau to linger in, not just ride through

Zlatibor is first and foremost a destination to stay in: spa resorts, hiking trails, and the Sirogojno open-air village museum, which recreates traditional Serbian wooden rural architecture, make it a pleasant base for combining a few days of easy riding with sightseeing. The Šargan Eight, a figure-eight narrow-gauge heritage railway built in the early 20th century, sits about 30 minutes away by road.

Going further

More experienced cyclists can extend the ride toward Bajina Bašta (47.7 km, 1,589 m of elevation gain) or Valjevo (nearly 102 km, 2,597 m of elevation gain), two significantly harder routes starting from the same plateau.

Good to know

The best season runs from May to September; since Zlatibor also doubles as a winter sports destination, the road can be snow-covered from December to March. Čajetina and Zlatibor both offer a good range of family-friendly accommodation.
