Peira Cava, a small hamlet perched at 1,450 m in Nice’s hinterland, is a popular starting point for exploring forest trails at the gates of the Mercantour National Park — surprisingly alpine mountain biking terrain less than an hour from the Côte d’Azur.
Alpine terrain close to the sea
From Peira Cava, trails head into dense larch and pine forest typical of the montane zone of the Alpes-Maritimes, before opening in places onto exposed ridges offering views that, on a clear day, reach all the way to the Mediterranean — a striking contrast between the alpine feel of the terrain and the coast’s proximity.
A typical day loop: around 25 km and 700 m of climbing between Peira Cava and the Lucéram area, on terrain that alternates flowing forest tracks with more technical trails, scattered with roots and rock outcrops shaped by the massif’s rugged geology.
How to approach the ride
The area’s terrain, shaped by centuries of erosion on steep mountainous ground, calls for good trail-reading skills: the best-known trails mix flowing sections with committing technical stretches, sometimes with pronounced off-camber sections on rocky ledges. Pads (knees, elbows) aren’t overkill on the more demanding lines.
The strong Mediterranean sunshine, even at altitude, can catch riders off guard: bring sun protection and enough water, especially in high summer.
When to go
The useful season runs from May to October, with an optimum in June and September to avoid both residual spring snow and the sometimes crushing heat of July-August on the most exposed sections. Autumn often brings particularly beautiful light on the larches.
Good to know
Peira Cava has limited but genuine accommodation (a few hotels and mountain guesthouses); L’Escarène and Lucéram, typical villages of Nice’s hinterland nearby, offer additional options for an MTB stay in the area.
