MTB

Le Mont-Dore, at the heart of the Sancy massif in Auvergne, runs one of the few MTB bike parks in the Massif Central. Served by cable car from the village, the area stands out for its volcanic terrain and beech forests, quite different from the big Alpine resorts.

A forested area served by cable car

From Le Mont-Dore, the cable car gives access to a trail network dropping through the Sancy massif’s forests. Expect around 15 km of cumulative descent on a typical day, with 250 m of residual climbing, most of the elevation handled by the cable car. The grippy volcanic terrain alternates maintained bike-park trails with more natural forest sections.

Getting the ride right

The area stays more approachable than the big Alpine bike parks, with a majority of green and blue trails. The dense forest still calls for good visibility and proper protective gear, as the vegetation can reduce sightlines.

When to go

June to September, when the cable car dedicated to mountain biking runs. The Auvergne climate, wetter than the southern Alps, can leave some sections slick after rain.

Good to know

Le Mont-Dore, a historic spa town, offers a decent choice of accommodation, with direct access to La Bourboule and the rest of the Sancy massif to extend the trip.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Mont-Dore bike park suit beginners?+

Yes, more so than the big Alpine resorts: the green and blue trails in the lower area stay accessible without prior experience, while a few more committing trails higher up cater to confident riders.

What sets the Sancy terrain apart from Alpine bike parks?+

The volcanic soil and beech forests give a faster-rolling, grippier surface than Alpine granite or alpine pasture, with an almost constant forest setting across most of the trail network.
