MTB

Åre, in Jämtland, is Sweden’s most renowned ski resort, but its summer area has become a landmark of international mountain biking thanks to hosting several UCI World Cup rounds.

An alpine area inherited from international competitions

From Åre, the chairlift gives access to a network of trails descending toward the valley through the alpine pastures and subarctic forests typical of Jämtland. Expect around 20 km of cumulative descending on a typical day, with 350 m of residual climbing, most of the elevation being handled by the lift. The terrain alternates groomed bike park runs with technical singletrack inherited from the World Cup course.

Getting the ride right

The area grades its trails by level, making it easy to build a progressive day starting on the more accessible trails before venturing onto more committing singletrack. The summit’s relatively modest altitude, combined with the northern latitude, can bring changeable weather even in high summer.

When to go

June to September, the season the lifts dedicated to mountain biking are open. The long days of the Nordic summer make it easy to fit in many descents without watching the clock.

Good to know

Åre offers a wide choice of accommodation geared toward mountain sports, with convenient direct train access from Stockholm, about six hours away, or via the nearby regional airport for an MTB getaway in Jämtland.
