The Sierra Nevada, above Granada, offers one of the most singular climbs in Europe: starting from a city at 700 m and climbing, in a single ride, past 2,100 m, with the option to keep going even higher toward the highest paved road on the continent.
A climb through several climate zones
From Granada, the road climbs about 32 km for 1,400 m of elevation gain up to the Pradollano resort, averaging a moderate 4.4% but over a length that makes it a demanding ride. The scenery gradually shifts from Granada’s outskirts to mid-mountain pine forests, then to an almost bare high-altitude landscape as it nears the resort.
Getting the ride right
The length of the climb and the change in altitude, with noticeably thinner air above 2,000 m, call for pacing the effort over the distance rather than setting off fast. Warm layers are recommended for the resort and the descent, as temperatures can drop sharply compared with Granada.
When to go
May to October, as the road stays closed by snow for much of the year beyond the resort. Spring and autumn bring milder temperatures than high summer, when heat can be intense on the lower section near Granada.
Good to know
Granada, a lively university city with a wide choice of accommodation, offers direct access to the resort without needing a car, with the option to combine the ride with a visit to the Alhambra for a stay that blends cycling and heritage.
