The Puig Major, Mallorca’s highest peak, has become over the decades one of the favourite training climbs for professional cycling teams spending their winter camps on the island.
The profile from Sóller
From Sóller, expect about 14.3 km and 850 m of climbing up to the Monnàber tunnel, averaging around 6%. The road climbs in steady switchbacks through the Serra de Tramuntana, offering open views over the Sóller valley and, on clear days, the island’s north coast.
Getting the ride right
The steady gradient, with no extreme section, allows a sustained tempo across the whole climb. The logical finishing point for cyclists is the Monnàber tunnel, as the true summit of the Puig Major stays closed to the public year-round bar one exception.
When to go
March to June and September to October, as summer heat and tourist traffic make the peak season less enjoyable. It’s also the preferred window for pro teams’ training camps.
Good to know
Sóller, a lively town at the foot of the Serra de Tramuntana, offers a wide choice of accommodation and bike rental options, with direct access to the Sa Calobra road for extending the ride with one of cycling’s most photographed descents.
