The Port d’Envalira, above Andorra la Vella, is the highest paved road pass in the Pyrenees: a 2,408 m summit that makes it a top objective for cyclists visiting the principality.
The profile from Andorra la Vella
From Andorra la Vella, expect about 25.3 km and 1,294 m of climbing, averaging 5.1%, with no single tough stretch but an effort that stretches out over the distance. The road passes through Encamp then Canillo before rising more sharply in the final third, up to a summit set within a broad, open pass.
Getting the ride right
The moderate average gradient allows a sustained tempo without needing to manage effort closely, but the summit’s altitude means warm layers are essential: temperatures can drop sharply up top even in midsummer, and wind is common.
When to go
June to September, as the road can be snow-covered or closed outside this window given the altitude. A toll tunnel lets vehicles bypass the pass in winter, but cyclists favour the pass road itself in season.
Good to know
Andorra la Vella, the principality’s capital, offers a wide choice of accommodation and convenient access to other great Pyrenean passes on the Spanish or French side for extending a cycling trip.
