Lake Garda, Italy’s largest lake, is fringed by limestone cliffs that drop straight into the water on its northern shore. Long impossible to cycle without using the main road, this stretch has had a striking cycle path since 2018, largely suspended over the lake, between Riva del Garda and Limone sul Garda.

A path suspended above the lake

From Riva del Garda, a lively town at the lake’s northern tip, the path first follows the shoreline before rising onto metal walkways bolted to the rock face, with sweeping views down onto the lake’s turquoise water. Expect around 27 km for a full out-and-back to Limone sul Garda, on near-flat terrain despite the vertigo-inducing setting.

Getting the ride right

The surface, fully paved and separated from motor traffic, works particularly well for a family outing. The suspended walkways, though secured with high railings, can be a little intimidating for younger children — pausing to take in the view before carrying on is no bad thing.

When to go

April to October, with spring and early autumn best for avoiding the summer heat and crowds — the path gets very busy in July-August.

Good to know

Riva del Garda and Limone sul Garda both offer a wide choice of accommodation well suited to a family trip, with several beaches along the route to mix cycling with a swim.

Frequently asked questions

Is the path really flat despite the lake's steep terrain?+

Yes, that's the whole point of this path, opened in 2018: rather than following the steep shoreline, it's largely built out over the water on suspended walkways cantilevered off the cliff face. Elevation gain stays minimal despite the dramatic mountain setting.

Does the route go all the way around the lake?+

No, only the stretch between Riva del Garda and Limone sul Garda, on the Trentino side, is a continuous dedicated path. The rest of the lake shore is in places shared with road traffic — check locally before extending beyond this section.
