Slovenský raj, the “Slovak Paradise,” protects one of Central Europe’s most spectacular karst landscapes, with gravel tracks skirting the deep gorges reserved for hikers.
Forest tracks around a karst landscape
From Spišská Nová Ves, the tracks head into the forests toward Hrabušice and then Čingov, running along the periphery of the park’s best-known gorges without entering them. Expect around 30 km and 500 m of elevation gain for a loop representative of the region, on terrain that alternates rolling forest tracks with more technical karst paths.
Getting the ride right
Versatile gravel tyres around 40-45mm suit most of the area’s forest tracks and karst paths. The relief, more pronounced than it appears on the plateaus overlooking the gorges, calls for decent fitness.
When to go
May to October, as winter often leaves the tracks snow-covered at this altitude. Summer offers the best conditions, with the option to combine the ride with a hike into one of the gorges fitted with ladders and chains.

Spišská Nová Ves, well served by train, offers a decent choice of accommodation, with convenient access to Spiš Castle, one of Central Europe’s largest castle complexes, for extending the stay in the region.
