Gravel

Český ráj, “Bohemian Paradise,” offers gravel terrain unique in the Czech Republic: forest tracks winding between spectacular sandstone formations, in the country’s very first protected landscape area.

Tracks between rock cities and forests

From Turnov, the tracks head into the forests toward Hrubá Skála and then Jičín, crossing several sandstone “rock cities” sculpted by erosion, of which Prachovské skály ranks among the most visited. Expect around 35 km and 500 m of elevation gain for a loop representative of the region, on terrain that alternates rolling forest tracks with sandier paths between the rocks.

Getting the ride right

Versatile gravel tyres around 40-45mm suit most of the area’s forest tracks and sandy paths. The dense trail network makes it easy to adjust the distance depending on the time available to explore the different rock cities.

When to go

April to October, with autumn offering particularly photogenic colour across the deciduous forests surrounding the rock formations. Summer remains rideable but busier with hikers and climbers.

Good to know

Turnov, a historic town known for its jewellery craft, offers a decent choice of accommodation, with convenient access to Jičín, a pretty baroque town, for extending the stay in Český ráj.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Český ráj historically important for nature protection?+

Declared a protected landscape area in 1955, Český ráj was the very first of its kind in Czechoslovakia — a pioneering status that preserved its spectacular rock formations and "rock cities" well before the country's major national parks were created.

What are the "rock cities" the tracks cross?+

These sandstone formations, sculpted by erosion, such as those at Prachovské skály, form genuine labyrinths of rock towers and alleys. Český ráj has also been recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark for the richness and diversity of these geological landscapes.
