The Col de Bavella, dominated by the famous rock needles of the same name, is one of the most spectacular cycling passes in Corsica — scenery that contrasts sharply with alpine or Pyrenean climbs thanks to its karst relief and Mediterranean vegetation.
A short but spectacular pass
From Zonza, it’s about 9.5 km for 480 m of climbing, averaging 5% — a figure that hides noticeably steeper sections. It’s a short ascent compared to the alpine giants, but its appeal lies mainly in the scenery: laricio pine forest, rocky chaos, and the Bavella needles towering over the pass at the top.
The summit, at 1,218 m, offers an exceptional view of the needles and, on a clear day, as far as the sea on the Solenzara side.
How to approach the ride
Heat is the main factor to manage in Corsica, especially in summer: the road has little shade over several stretches, and supply points are scarce between Zonza and the summit. Starting early avoids both the heat and the tourist traffic, which gets heavy in peak season on this road that also serves GR20 hikers.
The road surface is generally good but narrow in places, with sections busy with campervans in summer — extra caution is warranted in the less visible stretches.
When to climb it
The ideal window runs from May to October. July-August brings intense heat and heavy tourist traffic; spring and early autumn offer more comfortable conditions and a quieter road.
Good to know
Zonza, a mountain village with a distinctly Corsican character, has a decent choice of accommodation for its size, with convenient access to other notable sites in the Alta Rocca region.
