Road

The Bollenstreek, between Haarlem and Leiden, turns every spring into a vast, colourful checkerboard of tulip, hyacinth and daffodil fields, offering one of the most photogenic and sought-after bike rides in the Netherlands.

A colourful mosaic between the fields

From Lisse, paved farm roads wind between bulb fields toward Sassenheim and Noordwijk, on an almost entirely flat route that lets you freely compose your own itinerary around whichever fields happen to be in bloom. Expect around 30 km for a loop representative of the region, well maintained and rideable year-round.

Getting the ride right

No specific gearing is needed on this flat terrain. The main challenge is timing: since the bloom window varies with that year’s weather and the varieties grown, it’s worth checking local bloom forecasts before setting off to maximise the chances of catching fields at full colour.

When to go

Mid-March to mid-May, generally peaking around mid-April. The Keukenhof gardens, in Lisse, also only open during this window and make a worthwhile paid stop to add to the route.

Good to know

Lisse and Noordwijk, the latter on the North Sea coast, offer accommodation suited to a spring stay, with convenient access to Haarlem and Leiden for combining the ride with a visit to South Holland’s historic towns.

Frequently asked questions

Are the fields in bloom year-round?+

No, the bloom only lasts a few weeks, generally from mid-March to mid-May depending on the variety and that year's weather, peaking around mid-April. Outside this window, the fields are just ordinary farmland with no particular visual interest — it's worth checking bloom forecasts before planning the ride.

Do you have to pay to see the tulips from the road?+

No, most of the fields can be viewed for free from the public farm roads. The Keukenhof gardens, in Lisse, are a separate paid option, open only during the bloom season, offering more curated varieties in a landscaped setting.
